À propos du podcast

Join Luke Westaway and Andy Farrant as they talk about cinema's greatest achievement: Disney Channel Original Movies. From X-TREME rollerblading, to Mermen, to homicidal smart homes, there's something for everyone in these brilliant, baffling films. Also, usually the mom character in the film is unable to cook, and this is considered richly comic. Hence the name.

    Notes de l’épisode

It’s every parent’s nightmare: you leave your teenage son in charge of your eight year old daughter when you go out one night, and thanks to his negligence she witnesses someone being turned into a blood fountain. There’s only one solution: a babysitter.

That’s the situation that a mortified Ethan finds himself in at the start of this movie, but when it becomes clear that his babysitter is not only a fledgling vampire, but is also embroiled in some kind of vampire war that threatens to destroy the town, Ethan and a local sex creep that he hangs out with for some reason must help her defeat the vampiric evil once and for all. What is the vampires’ evil plan? Why do this film’s writers hate Twilight so much? And surely the Disney channel won’t show like 30 kids getting murdered? Listen and find out!

    Notes de l’épisode

Tucker, no last name given, is a con man whose schemes have got him in a lot of trouble over the years. But when he gets out of prison and realises a couple of gangsters are still after him for a $50,000 debt he owes them, he does what any of us would do in that situation: instantly become the headmistress of a boarding school for teenage girls.

This is something of a problem for Tucker, as he appears to have never met or seen a woman before, and is basing his portrayal of one on half-remembered bigfoot footage, or possibly some of the gnarlier Resident Evil monsters. But don't worry, before long the girls of Rawlings Academy are all in on their new shrieking cryptid headmistress. Will Tucker go through with his plan to swindle the school out of $500,000? Why does everyone find Mr. Headmistress so deeply attractive? And... wait, did he just say he started the Falklands War? Listen and find out!

It is the year 2055. Time travel has been invented and of course, people are using it for the only reason anyone would want to use time travel: to go back to prehistory and shoot an allosaurus with one million lasers.

That's the service offered by Time Safari, the private company run by Ben Kingsley and his distracting hair, who take great pains to ensure that nothing in the past is changed due to the catastrophic consequences it could have for the present. But when time waves start buffeting future Chicago it becomes clear that something has gone wrong and it's up to expedition leader Travis Ryer to figure out what happened before everyone evolves into sad catfish monsters and gets eaten by thousands of beetles. Can the time waves be stopped? Why are there super baboons everywhere? And did Ray Bradbury see this movie before he died? We sure hope not!

    Notes de l’épisode

Mitchie Torres is heading back to Camp Rock for another summer of fun, music and romance with chemsex bad boy rock star Shane Grey. But oh no! It turns out that the improbably named owner of Camp Rock, Brown Cesario, has a rival in the form of his former bandmate Axel Turner, who has set up a rival camp across the lake named Camp Star.

Obviously unable to compete with Camp Star on any level, things at Camp Rock look bleak. That is until Mitchie challenges Camp Star to a final jam to determine once and for all who is the best rock and roll fantasy camp owned by a 70s rockstar on this particular lake. Can the plucky underdogs of the prohibitively expensive and elitist Camp Rock win the day against the snobs of Camp Star? Did Brown Cesario's old band really used to be called "The Wet Crows"? And isn't it kind of cheating to have the Jonas Brothers on your team? Listen and find out!

Radio. What is it? Is it some kind of podcast, maybe? Or possibly a Winamp skin? If you find out, let the producers of 2012 DCOM Radio Rebel know, because I think they'd really appreciate it.

Radio Rebel tells the story of Tara, a shy teen with a secret double life as Radio Rebel, an inexplicably popular Seattle-wide radio host whose entire shtick appears to be telling people to be their real selves, talking about things happening in one specific high school, and then playing Peter Gabriel records. But when her enraged principal threatens to cancel prom unless Radio Rebel's identity is revealed, Tara's house of lies threatens to come crashing down, to the presumed bemusement of everyone in Seattle who doesn't go to her school. Can Tara and Radio Rebel coexist? How do you expose Banksy? And what the hell is a morp? Listen and find out!

    Notes de l’épisode

Remember Encino Man? The 1992 comedy movie about a caveman who gets thawed out and must adjust to life in the 20th century? Well, our advice would be to cling to that relatively positive memory like your life depended on it, because the straight-to-TV sequel Encino Woman (1996) is quite possibly the worst film we've ever seen.

When unsuccessful ad executive David Hosenfelt is attacked in his home by a roaming cavewoman, he finds his luck turns as 'Lucy' becomes the face of a lucrative fashion campaign for a fragrance called Primal. Sounds like a reasonable premise for a movie, right? Listener, you are unfortunately mistaken. Grit your teeth as we recap a movie that was, remarkably, never re-broadcast or released on any home media. Although that fact gets less remarkable the longer you watch.

    Notes de l’épisode

Zoe's only just started at her new high school, but already she finds her existence beset by boys. Stinking, rude, unfocused, noisy, stinking boys. Did we mention they stink? Luckily, through a series of electrical mishaps, an app on Zoe's phone becomes boy-mind-control software, and soon Zoe has turned every boy in school into an unwilling puppet, and she begins to reshape the world according to her own girlish whims.

If you think that sounds like a troubling premise for a movie, good instincts! Luke and Andy grapple with the ramifications of Zoe (played by a young Zendaya) gleefully shattering the minds of every boy in town, and suffer their own psychological damage at the hands of Jackson, Zapped's romantic interest whose favourite novel?... well, let's just say it might surprise you.

    Notes de l’épisode

Andy deploys his 2026 wildcard (which is a movie we'll recap even if it's not a kids movie, TV movie or both), to devastating effect with Congo (1995), a jaw-droppingly stupid adaptation of Michael Crichton's novel that dares to ask the question: What if you had to go into the jungle to find special diamonds for the boss of a telecoms giant, but the whole region was guarded by a pack of genetically-altered super apes that happen to look like men trampolining around in unconvincing suits. Also: You have brought along a gorilla that can speak thanks to the magic of technology, but it mostly wants to get high. Also: Tim Curry is here, playing the worst-named character in all of time.

We could go on about Congo and its variously unhinged scenes, moments, accents, but we already have! In this episode of Mom Can't Cook! A DCOM Podcast! So hit play and strap in, frankly.

    Notes de l’épisode

Lemonade Mouth. It sounds like a disease citric acid factory workers get that makes their lower jaw fall off, but it is in fact a band. And not just any band. The most revolutionary, visionary, exemplary band that ever rocked a high school halloween bash and are possibly hallucinating the entire thing due to tainted lemonade from the 1950s.

When five misfit teens are thrown together in detention they realise they all have one thing in common: a love for incredibly innoffensive soft pop. But can their musical talents flourish in a school that makes them practice in a basement? Is their talent directly linked to the suspect lemonade they're constantly drinking? And should they just give up, because their rivals, evil band Mudslide Crush are a lot better than them? Listen and find out!

    Notes de l’épisode

Can dentists go to heaven? That's the question that only Toothless (1997) is bold enough to ask, and also bold enough to answer: No.

This is what dead dentist Dr. Katherine Lewis discovers after she is hit by a car and wakes up in limbo, and discovers that, as punishment for her life of fixing people's mouths, she is sentenced to be the tooth fairy, visiting children's homes unseen to collect their teeth and exchange them for shiny silver coins, until such time as the powers that be decide that she has served her time and can go to heaven. But in an interesting twist, it turns out that Katherine is bad at this and so before long, she's chatting to kids, giving them advice and occasionally watching their dads undress. Will Katherine be able to make it to heaven despite her many, many crimes? Does Disney realise that not every country has the concept of a tooth fairy? And if your movie's script is bad, is it enough to just do the cabbage patch and hope for the best? Listen and find out!

High school these days is tougher than ever, what with the pressures of social media, the looming spectre of AI and, of course, King Arthur's evil half-brother Mordred, who is always shoving you into lockers and putting plastic ants on your hot dogs.

Or at least he is if you attend Avalon High, a typical American high school that may also be the setting for the resurrection of King Arthur himself, called back to the mortal realm by a world that needs him now more than ever. But can new Avalon High student Allie discover this reincarnated Arthur's true identity? Can Mordred be stopped before he destroys Arthur and several more barbecues? You know you're in for a good time when a movie features a 'witch mountain', right? Well, not if you've seen 1995's Escape to Witch Mountain. Then you'll know how it's perfectly possible for a film featuring a witch mountain to also be utterly incomprehensible and intensely dull!

Never mind, at least this baffling remake of the 1975 family film - which tells the story of psychic alien twins reuniting after years spent apart - also features a hilariously stupid villainous scheme, and makes for an extremely giddy recap. It also boasts Erik von Detten and Sam Horrigan, who would go on to play Brink and Val in the legendary 1998 skating DCOM!

What if Home Alone starred a mouse instead of Kevin McCallister, and what if the Wet Bandits legally owned the house he was murdering them in? These are the questions that only Mouse Hunt is brave enough to ask.

When brothers Ernie and Lars Smuntz inherit a dilapidated old mansion from their father, their disappointment turns to excitement when they realise that it is a lost architectural masterpiece that could earn them millions of dollars. Unfortunately for them however, the house is now inhabited by one super intelligent, pitiless rodent who will stop at nothing to make sure these men's skeletons are pulverised, their bodies set on fire and any other pets they acquire are killed. Can Ernie and Lars best this beast and sell the missing LaRue mansion? Is the mouse justified in its roaring rampage of revenge? And is string cheese just one long piece of cheese tied up in a ball? In this opening episode of the show, Marshall and his family find themselves being welcomed to the neighbourhood by Betty Wilson, a local woman who is keen on ForeverWare, plastic containers that keep anything fresh. Naturally however, Marshall isn't going to stand for that and with the help of new friend and sidekick Simon, sets out to find out what's really going on with ForeverWare.

After this year's Halloween special on Haul Out the Halloween, we realised that we'd already ruined the year, so why not do Haul Out the Holly for our Christmas show? It's not like it could get any worse.

Friends, how wrong we were. Haul Out the Holly is the first of three Haul Out movies, and this one shows us how Emily Melrose (Lacey Chabert) came to Evergreen Lane in the first place. How did she end up with a 2.6 million dollar house in suburban Utah? How did she become obssessed with the holidays? And how did she end up in a romantic relationship with Jared, a man who can only become aroused by HOA regulations? The answers may surprise you! Because they are sinister and insane.

    Notes de l’épisode

Are the Jonas Brothers real? That's the question at the centre of 2025's Disney+ original movie 'A Very Jonas Christmas Movie', which is either grimly cynical xmas fluff, or a biting comedy about siblings raised in the spotlight that lays bare the personal and professional failings of each Jonas Brother. It's very hard to tell.

That said, we're trying our best to pin down this quantum-state Christmas movie, in which Joe, Nick and Kevin Jonas are thrust into a madcap chase across Europe in a bid to be home for the 25th. The only thing we do know is that if the authorities ever catch Santa, he's going to jail for a long time. They probably won't catch him though, not when he has the power to detonate any vehicle with his mind.

Josh Townsend is having a bad week. His parents have moved him to New Mexico for his fathers' work, his new hometown is overrun with both buffalo and bicycle knaves, and to make things worse, he has to get a job as a fence repairman so the buffalo don't escape and murder one specific woman.

But before long, Josh's initially fraught relationship with the local Navajo people and Buffalo steward John Blackhorse starts to thaw, and Josh realises that he must go on a vision quest, speaking to a glowing hawk, and challenge the bicycle knaves to a high stakes bike race for 11 million acres of Navajo land. Can Josh secure the future of the land and the buffalo? Can he even do that, considering the land isn't his in the first place? And is Josh's dad sexually attracted to the sky? Listen and find out!

    Notes de l’épisode

If you were making a film and one of your characters was a petulant manbaby who was obsessed with rules, spent half of the film in a costume store pretending to be Gandalf and could only become aroused by enforcing the rules of the local homeowners' association, you'd imagine that character would be the villain, right?

Well, welcome to the Hallmark Channel's Haul Out the Halloween, where not only is this character, Jared, not the villain, he is also the romantic lead and deuteragonist, alongside his wife Emily. Emily and Jared live on Evergreen Lane, known as the most festive street in America, on account of how they go all in on Christmas decorations every year. But while they love Christmas, Halloween is banned because Emily got scared by a scarecrow once 25 years ago, and then her grandma died of unrelated causes several weeks later. But with the arrival of new spooky neighbours, played by Marnie and Kalabar Jr. from Halloweentown, the residents of Evergreen Lane decide that it might be ok to put up some plastic pumpkins this year, and still manage to turn it into a stressful ordeal because these people can't do anything right. Anyway, listen on for one of the most baffling films we've ever watched on this podcast, and enjoy!

It's spooky season folks, and we're hitting the ground running with 2012's Girl vs. Monster, an ooky, spooky, rip roaring romp about a girl who fights a lot of things that you could certainly describe as monsters if you were absolutely positive there would be no follow up questions.

The girl in question is Skylar, a regular teen with a medical lack of fear who in a fit of pique one Halloween decides to destroy all her parents' scientific equipment, and by extension their life's work. But unbeknownst to Skylar, it turns out her parents are actually monster hunters, and by destroying their equipment Skylar has unleashed all manner of evil spirits onto the town, as well as restored Skylar's sense of fear at the worst possible time. Will Skylar be able to conquer her fears and face the monsters? Will the Halloween party at the old McQuarry Mansion still go ahead? And does anyone want to buy some slightly used orbs? Listen and find out!

    Notes de l’épisode

If the Disney Channel approached you and asked you to write a movie about mascots, but you didn't know anything about mascots, you would probably do one of two things:

    1) Go away and learn about mascots, then write the movie.

    2) Say "sorry, I don't know anything about mascots, I cannot write this movie".

However, there is a secret third option, and that is to write the movie anyway, despite not knowing what a mascot is, or what one does, or how people would react to it.

And friends, that's the option that we have to assume led to 2009's Hatching Pete, in which a boy named Pete inspires a basketball team, lifts the hearts of an entire town, and gets away with grand theft auto by doing normal mascotting in a normal way. But will people still love Pete when he isn't in a chicken suit? Can the Brewster Roosters finally win a game if there is a chicken breakdancing in their peripheral vision? And could Disney somehow find a way for this movie to launch the pop career of Mitchell Musso? Listen and find out!

    Notes de l’épisode

John Scaduto has a problem. If he can get through the school term without getting in trouble, he stands to get a $10,000 check from his grandma. Unfortunately, he has already set into motion an epic prank that will maim his headmaster and earn him up to one demerit on his permanent record. But when his headmaster is incapacitated by a second, unrelated Scaduto attack, John realises that the answer to his problem is simple: hire a random drifter to pretend to be the Principal and hope against hope that he doesn't turn out to be some kind of sex criminal.

Enter Fitz, a free-spirited traveller who takes on the role of Dr Vernon Baxter, the substitute Principal, in exchange for some drumsticks and the chance to mess with the system. But before long, Fitz's methods are causing anarchy at the school, plus about 14 other plot lines that I don't really have the space to go into here. But can John reign in Fitz's anarchic spirit and bring the school back under control? Why is there a second Vernon Baxter running around? And why is there a THIRD Vernon Baxter running around? Listen and find out!
