Why is saying no so hard for women in midlife? Your kids, your partner, your parents, your friends, your work and the school WhatsApp all want a piece of you — and because you're so capable, everyone assumes you'll say yes.
This week on Self Care Club: The Midlife Edition, Nicole Goodman and Lauren Mishcon talk about why saying no might be one of the most important forms of self-care in your 40s and 50s — and how to actually do it without guilt.
In this episode:
- Why women are conditioned to people-please — and why midlife is the moment to stop
- "What you tolerate, you allow": how being capable makes people assume you'll do everything
- The joy of JOMO — why you don't have to go to everything anymore
- Why a genuine no is kinder than a fake, resentful yes
- The simple pause that stops the automatic yes
- Every no is a yes to something else
- You don't need an excuse — how to say no honestly and briefly
- Saying no to the request, not the person
- Curating your friendships and letting other people be disappointed
- Where to start if you really struggle with setting boundaries

On today’s show we’re talking about something that affects millions of women but that we still find surprisingly difficult to talk about: our bladders.
Urinary incontinence, recurrent UTIs, pelvic floor problems and prolapse are incredibly common, particularly as women move through their 40s, perimenopause and menopause. But how much of it is actually "normal", how much should we put up with, and when should we get help?
This week we are joined by Miss Neha Sihra, Consultant Urological Surgeon, to answer the questions women are often too embarrassed to ask.
We talk about why childbirth, perimenopause and menopause can change your bladder, whether low oestrogen can cause urinary symptoms even without vaginal dryness, and whether needing to wee more frequently or waking up several times a night is simply part of getting older.
We get into urinary incontinence, including stress incontinence and overactive bladder, why women leak when they laugh, sneeze, run or jump, and what treatments are actually available.
Then it's time for UTIs. Why do some women suddenly start getting recurrent infections in midlife? How can you tell the difference between a UTI, overactive bladder and menopause-related urinary symptoms? Can you have UTI symptoms without actually having an infection? And does cranberry really help?
We also tackle pelvic floor health and prolapse. What does a prolapse actually feel like? Can you have one without knowing? Does running, lifting weights or playing sports make it worse? And what's the difference between a weak pelvic floor and one that's actually too tight?
Finally, Neha explains which bladder and urinary symptoms women should get checked rather than simply putting them down to ageing or menopause, and the symptoms she wishes women would stop ignoring.
If you've ever crossed your legs before sneezing, planned your day around toilet locations, had a UTI at the most inconvenient possible moment or wondered whether that sudden need to wee every five minutes is "just your age", this one's for you.
In this episode we discuss:
Women's bladder health
Urinary incontinence and menopause
Stress incontinence
Overactive bladder
Recurrent UTIs
UTIs and perimenopause
Vaginal oestrogen and urinary symptoms
HRT and bladder health
Pelvic floor problems
Pelvic organ prolapse
Bladder problems and sex
Exercise and urinary incontinence
When to see a urologist
Which urinary symptoms should be checked by a doctor

This week Nicole's daughter Daisy went off to uni — and it's brought up every contradictory feeling going: pride, relief, grief, liberation, and the sudden silence of a house that used to be full of noise.
In this episode, Lauren and Nicole dig into what it really means to become an empty nester (or, as they'd rather call it, a "free bird") — without turning it into either a tragedy or a celebration. Because you're allowed to feel whatever you actually feel.
We cover the emotional whiplash of drop-off day, what you're really grieving when the house goes quiet, the identity shift of no longer being needed the same way, navigating phone calls and contact without guilt-tripping, why the empty nest doesn't actually stay empty, and how to rebuild your relationship with your partner once the parenting dynamic changes.
If your kid has just left, is about to leave, or you're dreading it already, this episode is your permission slip to feel it all.

What if the midlife confidence crisis isn't about losing confidence; but about outgrowing what used to create it?
In today’s episode Lauren and Nicole unpack why confidence feels harder to access in your 40s and 50s, even when nothing's "wrong." They break confidence down into six areas: identity, capability, body image, desirability, agency, and belonging and do a confidence audit asking the questions most women never stop to ask themselves.
In this episode we discuss:
Why the confidence markers that worked in your 20s and 30s stop working in midlife
The link between perimenopause symptoms (brain fog, fatigue, poor sleep) and feeling "less capable"
Body image and attractiveness in midlife - what actually changes
Why confidence often comes after action, not before it
Rebuilding friendships and finding "your people" in midlife
How evidence, not perfection, builds real confidence
If you've ever felt like you don't recognize yourself lately, this episode is for you.

This episode is sponsored by Welbeck – providing beyond better healthcare.
Welcome to the first episode of our brand-new Ask The Doctor series.
In this special bonus episode, we put your midlife health questions directly to a medical expert and this time, we're talking about insomnia, menopause and sleep.
Sleep problems are incredibly common during the perimenopause and menopause, with around 40–60% of women experiencing sleep disruption during the menopausal transition. But why does sleep become so difficult in midlife? What causes us to struggle to fall asleep? And what can we actually do to improve our sleep?
We put your questions to Professor Guy Leschziner, one of the UK's leading neurologists and sleep experts. Guy is a Consultant Neurologist at Welbeck and Guy’s Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital, where he runs specialist sleep and epilepsy clinics as well as general neurology clinics.

Why does sleep seem to get so much harder in midlife? From waking at 3am and being unable to get back to sleep, to lying awake with a racing mind, insomnia is one of the most common and frustrating symptoms women experience during the menopausal transition. In this episode of Self Care Club - The Midlife Edition, we’re talking all things sleep, insomnia and menopause with Professor Guy Leschziner, Consultant Neurologist at Welbeck and Guy’s Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital.
We explore what’s really happening to our brains and bodies during menopause, the difference between poor sleep and clinical insomnia, and why you can spend eight hours in bed and still wake up feeling exhausted. We also get into brain fog, sleep trackers, caffeine, screens and blue light, snoring, HRT and the lifestyle changes that can genuinely make a difference.
We discuss:
The 2 biggest mistakes people make when trying to improve their insomnia
Why we shouldn’t be mean to snoring husbands
Why Sleep trackers can be harmful
The importance of aking at the same time every day
If you’re struggling with sleep in midlife, this is one you won’t want to miss.

Welcome back! And a big welcome to a brand new season and new chapter of this podcast. After seven years of exploring wellness and self-care, we’re evolving because, well, we’re evolving! In this intro episode, we talk about why self-care looks different in midlife and the real-life questions that come with this stage of life.
We’re talking perimenopause and menopause, hormones, sleep and insomnia, anxiety, confidence, changing bodies, relationships, friendship, empty nesting, career, purpose, sex, ageing and finding joy in midlife.
This isn’t about fixing yourself, looking younger or pretending midlife is always fabulous. It’s about honest conversations, expert advice and figuring out what actually matters to us now.
In this episode:
Why Self Care Club is becoming The Midlife Edition
What self-care means in your 40s and 50s
The biggest challenges and opportunities of midlife
Why we’re talking more openly about menopause, mental health, relationships and identity
What’s coming up on the podcast
We really want you all to get involved because you are going to shape this next chapter of the show so please send in your questions, stories and topic ideas to us: [email protected] or dm us on Instagram @selfcareclubpod. What are you struggling with in midlife? What guests would you love to hear from? What are you currently trying to figure out?
We're calling this The Midlife Edition because we believe this stage of life deserves its own conversation. Not because we're putting women in a box, but because there's so much to explore and so much we don't talk about enough.
Welcome to the new Self Care Club. Let’s talk about midlife honestly, openly and without pretending we have all the answers.

Dreams seem to fascinate us; why we have them, what they are and where they come from. The majority of dream researchers today believe that dreams are messages from our unconscious mind and if we know how to interpret them, they can be powerful tools for personal growth. Research has shown that the more you remember and investigate your dreams, the better your creativity and problem-solving skills and can give you insight as well as be a source of guidance, healing, discovery, change and growth. So this week at the club we are going to teach you how to capture and remember your dreams. To help us with this week and we enlisted Theresa Cheung. Theresa is a Sunday Times bestselling author and one of 32 women listed in the 100 most spiritually influential living people of 2023. It’s the last episode before we take a break for summer and we’re going out in a haze of sunshine, rebellion, and possibly crisps for dinner. Because summer has a sneaky way of waking up a part of us that goes into hibernation the rest of the year; the spontaneous one, the barefoot one, the one who remembers how to just be, instead of constantly doing. In this episode, we’re asking: What version of you emerges when the sun’s out and the pressure’s off? Is it your fun side? Your libido? Your ability to sit in a deckchair without feeling like you should be folding laundry? We’re talking summer selves, seasonal magic, and how to hang onto a little bit of that barefoot energy even when September rolls in.

Before the rumours start… no, Self Care Club isn’t ending! We’re just pressing pause for the summer.
After nearly seven years of making the podcast we love, we’ve been having some honest conversations about where the show is now, where we’ve changed, and where we want to go next.
Because the truth is we’re not the same women who started this podcast. The audience has changed, the wellness world has changed, and our conversations have changed too. Somewhere along the way, we found ourselves talking less about collagen and goat yoga, and much more about the things that actually shape our lives now.
Hormones, confidence, ageing, relationships, careers, teenagers, marriage, the mental load, identity, ambition, reinvention and what the second half of life really looks like.
And those are the conversations we’re most excited about.
So we’re taking a summer break to rest, rethink and create a refreshed version of Self Care Club. Same friendship, same honesty, same laughs, but with a much bigger focus on midlife and the brilliant, messy, confusing stage of life we’re all navigating.
Expect conversations about menopause, women’s health, confidence, friendship after 40, ageing, beauty, sex, identity, empty nests, ADHD in women, relationships, reinvention and everything else we’re all secretly wondering about.
Because midlife deserves its own space. Women in their 40s and 50s are often talked about, but not always talked to. We want this show to feel like sitting down with friends who are asking the same questions you are honest, funny, thoughtful, and still very much us. While we’re away, we won’t disappear. We’ll still be around, sharing things on social media, and we’ll be bringing you episodes from the very beginning of Self Care Club so you can relive the journey with us; or discover it if you’re new.
Thank you for listening, supporting us, and growing with us.
This isn’t goodbye. It’s the start of the next chapter and we genuinely think it’s going to be our best one yet !

This week on Self Care Club, we welcome Jo Hutton, yoga teacher, writer, trainer and creator of Yoga for Tired People, one of the world's leading health and wellbeing Substacks.
Despite spending years teaching wellbeing practices, Jo experienced severe burnout in 2022. In this powerful conversation, she shares what burnout really looked like behind the scenes, why knowing about self-care isn't the same as practising it, and what genuine recovery actually requires.
Together, we explore burnout recovery, nervous system regulation, chronic exhaustion, the difference between rest and recovery, and why so many people still feel tired even after taking time off. This week on the podcast, we’re diving into a concept you’ve probably seen everywhere lately: glimmers. Recently identified by trend forecasters as one of the defining wellbeing trends for 2026, glimmers - the opposite of triggers - are tiny moments that spark feelings of safety, joy, calm, or connection. At a time when wellness can often feel overwhelming, expensive, or performative, glimmers offer something beautifully simple: the ability to find nourishment in what’s already around us. To explore this idea, we’re joined by two women who have quite literally written the book on it — sisters Nadia Narain and Katia Narain Phillips, authors of Glimmers: Tiny Moments to Transform Your Life.Nadia and Katia have spent decades exploring healing, self-care, nervous system regulation, and emotional wellbeing.
Together they are also the bestselling authors of Self-Care for the Real World and Rituals for Every Day.In this conversation, we discuss:- What glimmers actually are and why they matter
- How noticing small positive moments can support nervous system regulation
- The science behind glimmers and brain rewiring
- Why this practice resonates so deeply right now
- The connection between glimmers, trauma healing, and mental health
- Simple ways to begin noticing glimmers in everyday life
- Personal glimmers Nadia and Katia have experienced recently
- And the self-care practices they turn to themselves

This week on 40ish Lauren reaches peak midlife as she attends an wholesome Ottolenghi Cooking Club; yet somehow gets embroiled in a conversation about anal s*x within 3 minutes of arrival. Meanwhile Nicole realises that you know when you’re spending too much time with your gyne when he feels fully comfortable eating crisps off your plate. In midlife news it turns out almost half of middle-aged Brits are still traumatised by school PE - not surprising if you remember being asked to climb that rope in a pair of big navy pants. We hear from listeners navigating menopause in toxic workplaces, sharing the very real fear of education being weaponised, but also why the conversation still has to happen. Today’s dilemma asks: Is it actually possible to lose weight in your 40s? Despite doing “all the right things” (gym, PT, food), social media is screaming that unless you buy a miracle pill, it’s game over. We get into the pressure, the myths, and the reality of midlife bodies.

On 40ish -
In today’s show: Nicole goes to Barcelona. Nicole gets very drunk. Nicole takes electrolytes and Movicol before bed and decides that it would be socially acceptable to kiss Jon Hamm if he just happened to turn up. Lauren decides to share her drunk texts with the nation. We also discuss the absolute state of modern “healthy” recipes including cauliflower fudge (why), cauliflower pizza (still why), turkey mince pizza (call the police) There’s also a dilemma from someone who is completely fed up with hearing about menopause everywhere she turns and wonders if awareness has gone too far. (Short answer: No!) Plus petty midlife annoyances, full bins, clicky phone keyboards, Kirsty Alley, Family Ties (remember that?) all the usual chaos. If you enjoyed this episode, please share it with a friend who needs a laugh (or an electrolyte).

This episode is sponsored by Welbeck - providing beyond better healthcare. Every 12 minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with Bowel Cancer. Bowel Cancer Awareness Month takes place every April to raise awareness of symptoms, promote early diagnosis, and encourage screening. As the UK's fourth most common cancer, early detection is critical, with over 90% of cases surviving if caught early. It mainly affects people over 50 but can affect anyone. To talk all about this today we are delighted to welcome consultant gastroenterologistDr Adam Haycock to the show. We get into the importance of screening, symptoms to watch out for and what exactly happens at a colonoscopy. Adam explains: The warning signs people should be aware of Why symptoms must be checked urgently Which symptoms are often dismissed or mistaken for something less serious How particular women's conditions can cause confusing symptoms What to do if you feel embarrassed Why it is vital to take part in the free screening test for over 50’s Plus, we discuss why people are so weird about poo, what a polyp is and why they need to be looked at. Today we are bringing you an episode from our other podcast 40ish (don't say we don't spoil you) Please enjoy this episode. This week on 40ish, Nicole reports from the glamorous world of post-surgery recovery where the main event of the day is… taking painkillers. Timing them, thinking about them, planning the next one. Meanwhile, Lauren has a mysterious foot situation developing. There is very validating listener feedback about the extremely serious issue of designated mugs. We also tackle this week’s dilemma where a woman is left wondering if some friendships can recover after youve been seriously let down. Plus we share some midlife meltdowns, including an existential crisis in the cereal aisle and a listener asking the question many of us are secretly thinking: what exactly is the point of Facebook now? Expect rants, honesty and the comforting reminder that midlife is mostly just trying to take the right painkiller at the right time while drinking out of the correct mug.
