In this episode, 23 years as a SAG-AFTRA member, and I'm watching eight-page, plot-driving roles get labeled "Large Co-star" by CBS, ABC, HBO, Netflix, and Apple — a mislabel that's the difference between needing 23 TV bookings a year to qualify for health and pension versus needing 3. This week, I'm breaking down SAG's actual co-star definition, the pattern I'm seeing across every platform, and why it matters for every actor trying to build a real career.

Today we sit down with Luke Tennie — the Shrinking, Abbott Elementary, and Nickel Boys actor whose path to Hollywood began not in an acting class but on a football field, where being "too small" for the O-line turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to him.
Luke takes us inside his jaw-dropping first week out of AMDA, when he pinned both Jumanji and Shock and Awe simultaneously — and chose Rob Reiner. He shares the hard-won lessons from the lulls between jobs, including two pilots he booked that never shot, why he slept on a rolled-up mattress topper until 2019 to protect his audition time, and how starting to write his own material completely changed what he books.
Plus, a masterclass on self-tape strategy from the guy who literally taught audition technique back at his alma mater.
These are the unforgettable stories that landed Luke Tennie right here.

Today we're sitting down with the luminous Natalie Martinez, whose path to Hollywood started not in a classroom or on a stage — but at a mall in Miami, wearing a tank top and no bra, auditioning for Jennifer Lopez on a $100 bet from her mom.
From winning J.Lo's national model search to becoming one of television's most trusted leading ladies, Natalie has spent over two decades learning the craft entirely on the job. She shares what it was like to have Taylor Sheridan as her acting coach before he became a Hollywood powerhouse, how David Ayer had her and Michael Peña go on "mini dates" to build their chemistry for End of Watch, and why she credits Woody Harrelson for getting her cast in Brothers — even though the tape she submitted was never actually seen.
It's one of the most jaw-dropping "what's meant for you will find you" stories we've ever heard on this show.

Christopher Thornton — actor, writer, teacher, and one of the most quietly extraordinary storytellers working in Hollywood today.
His journey is not a straight line. It is a rock climbing accident that fractured two vertebrae and left him in a wheelchair — and an agency that dropped him in a signed card from his hospital bed. It is a then-unknown Mark Ruffalo tricking him into performing Waiting for Godot five months later — and the Drama-Logue Award that changed everything.
It is understudying the lead at the Mark Taper Forum with zero rehearsals and going on for a matinee AND an evening performance the same day. It is writing Sympathy for Delicious in 1997 and not shooting it until 2009. It is a Magnum P.I. surfboard scene he absolutely claimed he could handle. And it is thirty years of showing up — to the stage, to the room, to the tape, to the work — until Vice Principals, Magnum P.I., Lincoln Lawyer, and now The Pitt and Netflix's All the Sinners Bleed made the industry take notice.
These are the unforgettable stories that landed Christopher Thornton right here.

Cara Jade Myers asked Martin Scorsese how he wanted her to play Anna in Killers of the Flower Moon. He said — "You're the actor. Figure it out." And that single sentence gave her permission to know exactly what to do. This week we unpack why the permission you've been waiting for has always been yours to give yourself — and why Cara's decision to stop waiting for the industry and start writing, producing, and creating her own opportunities is the most important career move any actor can make right now. Stop waiting. Start creating. Figure it out.

Today we are sitting down with Cara Jade Myers — the Native American actress who spent ten years grinding through background work, PA gigs, and craft services before booking one of the most coveted roles in recent Hollywood history: Anna in Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon.
Cara takes us through the entire extraordinary journey — from auditioning for casting director Rene Haynes for years before getting noticed, to a nine-month process that ended in a Zoom call with Scorsese where she could only see his iconic eyebrows on screen. She shares what it was like working alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, the improvised flask moment that Scorsese immediately greenlit, and why the film's premiere on Hollywood Boulevard — during the strike — became one of the most bittersweet moments of her career.
Plus — why writing, producing, and building her own creative projects out of sheer frustration has become the most powerful move she's ever made.
These are the unforgettable stories that landed Cara Jade Myers right here.

Okay. A LAMDA trained British actor who is also a fully practicing member of The Magic Circle walked into this week's episode and completely changed how I think about self tapes. Brendan Patricks — Downton Abbey, Rivals, Gentleman Jack — figured out that the same techniques magicians use to control where an audience looks apply directly to your tape. This week we break down the Miles Davis philosophy of treating every single take like a live performance — not a rehearsal for one — and the magic misdirection principles that put you in full control of where the casting director's eye goes from the first frame to the last.

Show notes
Today, we're joined by Brendan Patricks, the British actor and close-up magician whose 20-plus-year career has taken him from the West End to acclaimed series like Downton Abbey, Rivals, and Gentleman Jack. Brendan shares how picking up his first deck of cards at 21, after his father gave him a tiny book of tricks, sparked a lifelong obsession with magic and ultimately transformed the way he approaches acting.
In this episode, Brendan takes us behind the scenes of playing Evelyn Napier on Downton Abbey, including the nerve-wracking audition where he bluffed about knowing how to ride a horse. He also shares clever self-tape techniques he picked up while performing virtual magic shows over Zoom, stories from set with Toni Collette and Patrick Dempsey, and reveals how mastering sleight of hand, misdirection, and improvisation has shaped his work as an actor. Tune in for a fascinating conversation about the surprising overlap between acting and illusion, and why sometimes the secret to a great performance is knowing exactly where you don't want the audience to look.

Cindy Busby spent two years in a career slump that almost broke her — and came back with a philosophy that changed everything. This week we get honest about the part nobody talks about: the hurt that lands in your body even when your head knows casting is selection not rejection. We break down why you are never being evaluated on whether you are good enough — only on whether your piece fits the puzzle they are building today — and what chopping wood actually looks like when the silence feels deafening.
Plus — Slaytember starts this week. Three weeks of grounded comedy work, real feedback, and a live chemistry mix and match session where you get a front row seat to watch the selection process happen in real time. Go listen to Cindy first — then come join us.

Today, we're stepping inside the audition room with Cindy Busby, an actress who has built an incredible two-decade career with more than 20 leading roles across film and television. From her breakout role as Ashley Stanton on the beloved series Heartland, to starring in fan favorites like Unleashing Mr. Darcy and Royal Hearts, to her current series lead on When Hope Calls, Cindy knows what it takes to build a career with real staying power.
In this episode, Cindy takes us all the way back to the theater school assignment that unexpectedly landed her first agent and a role on MTV's Undressed, and the nationwide search that changed her life when she booked Heartland. But she also gets candid about what happened when the momentum stopped, including a grueling two-year career slump that forced her to completely rethink her relationship with the business. Cindy shares how studying the Meisner technique, doing deep mindset work, and creating her own recovery rituals helped her rebuild her confidence, return to Heartland 11 years later, and ultimately step into a new chapter as the lead of When Hope Calls.

Get ready for an incredibly fun and insightful episode as we sit down with the hilariously talented Bill Glass, the actor behind one of the most recognizable faces, and fake mustaches, on television as Progressive's legendary "Dr. Rick"!
In this conversation, Bill takes us back to his Chicago roots and shares his journey from high school class clown who stumbled into improv to a true "lunch pail actor" who has spent 26 years building a successful career in Los Angeles. He also opens up about landing a recurring role alongside Ed Helms on Mike Schur's Rutherford Falls, and developing his "one for them, one for me" approach to auditioning. Bill gets real about navigating the politics of Hollywood, using improv to save the day on set, and why actors can't afford to sit around waiting for the traditional system to give them permission to work. Tune in for an inside look at how a series of intense auditions ultimately led to a life-changing "unicorn" commercial campaign and why Bill never treats a one-off role like it's just a one-off.

Logan Marshall-Green said it took him over a decade to truly own himself in front of a camera — and he also said something that reframes why it takes so long for all of us: "You don't make art to impress. You make art to unveil something about yourself." This week we break down the difference between performing AT the camera and letting it actually find you, why the gap between what you feel in a scene and what you see on your tape is not a flaw but the work itself, and how shifting from impressing to unveiling changes everything about the way you show up to every audition.
Slaytember is here, and every session is a rep toward the most unveiled version of yourself on camera. Go listen to Logan's full episode first — then come join us.

In this episode, Logan takes us through his raw and honest journey, from battling intense imposter syndrome on the set of Ridley Scott's Prometheus to eventually finding his camera "sea legs" and learning to trust himself on screen. We dive into what it was like to get into an unscripted, physical scrap with Richard Gere in Brooklyn's Finest, direct the legendary Ethan Hawke in Adopt a Highway, share the screen with Al Pacino in Killing Castro, and step onto the epic scale of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. Plus, Logan shares his invaluable "walkaway" audition philosophy: a mindset that teaches artists how to let go, trust the work they've done, and keep moving forward.
These are the unforgettable stories that landed Logan Marshall-Green right here.

Today's guest, Alex Bonifer, has taken a decidedly unconventional route to becoming a standout in some of television's most unique comedies. A summer improv class, forced upon him by his father, set him on a twelve-year journey through legendary comedy institutions including iO West, UCB, and The Groundlings. Alex went from working as a furniture salesman and Uber driver to becoming a series regular, landing memorable roles in Superstore, Kevin Can F**k Himself, and most recently Jury Duty. Along the way, he developed a philosophy of taking the "big swing" while "caring but not giving a shit" about the outcome. Alex gets candid about the grit, rejection, and persistence it took to get there, the physical secrets behind his character work, and how he stayed in character for his entire audition for "Dougie Jr."
These are the unforgettable stories that landed Alex Bonifer right here.

Jason Momoa was the FIRST one to audition for GAME OF THRONES and the LAST one cast a year later. His cousin's impact on his life helped him make a strong choice that ultimately landed him the role. But it took him a few years and a couple of classes to trust his instinctive strong choices and learn how to "audition." BAYWATCH discovered him in his native home of Hawaii among a 1,300-person cattle call. Jason responded to a radio call announcing the audition that would pay him more than the daily rate of folding T-shirts at the family-owned surf shop. Jason's unique look has always made him a different choice, but also made opportunities few and far between. So Jason, with many of his close friends, formed the production company Pride of Gypsies, which has made Jason into an all-around filmmaker — writing, producing, directing and acting.
Forever remembered for his unforgettable role as Drogo in Game of Thrones, Jason has since become a global star as Aquaman in the DC universe, Duncan Idaho in Dune, and the lead in Apple TV+'s See. He's also stepped further behind the camera, creating and starring in his passion project Chief of War, and appeared in A Minecraft Movie, The Fall Guy, and his travel/design series On the Roam.

Tom was born and raised in New Jersey. He grew up in the town of Howell, where he attended the Fine and Performing Arts Center at Howell High School. Upon graduation, he attended Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University (obtaining a BFA in acting), where he also had the opportunity to study Shakespeare at the Globe Theatre in London, England. Tom's first professional job was on the long-running CBS daytime show Guiding Light. During the two and a half years he was on the show, he was nominated for four consecutive Daytime Emmy Awards, winning twice (in 2006 and 2008). Having worked in theater, television, and independent film, he eventually became a series regular on the hit Cinemax show Banshee, playing former neo-Nazi Kurt Bunker.
Tom is a founding member and the current Artistic Director of the Apothecary Theatre Company—a NYC-based non-profit that develops and produces world premieres of new plays by up-and-coming playwrights. He made his Broadway debut in 2012 as Judy Garland's last husband, Mickey Deans, in the critically acclaimed End of the Rainbow, directed by Tony Award Winner Terry Johnson. Since his breakout in Ozark and David Fincher's Mank, he has gone on to star in Outer Range, Love and Death, She Said, and HBO's Task.
Considering that this interview was done via Zoom (a TOA first), as a means of moving forward in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is befitting that this episode of That One Audition retells the stories of adaptation and triumph that landed Tom Pelphrey right here.

Today, we're diving into the incredible journey of Abubakar Salim, an actor who at just 16, gave himself a life-altering ultimatum: break into the National Youth Theatre or join the Army. From that high-stakes beginning, Abubakar has navigated the industry by constantly chasing the raw, unpolished instinct of his younger self. He shares how this philosophy carried him through a grueling nine-round audition process for Ridley Scott's Raised by Wolves and eventually into the world of House of the Dragon. We explore how he transitioned from a "performer for hire" to a visionary storyteller by founding Surgent Studios, where he now creates video games like Tales of Kenzera: ZAU to process deeply personal themes of grief and loss. Get ready for an inspiring conversation about the power of "just being," the importance of kindness in a brutal industry, and why the most successful auditions are often the ones where you stop trying to have a plan and start seeking discovery.

Today we're diving into the incredible journey of Johnny Coyne, an actor who traveled from the rugged mountains of Cyprus to the legendary sets of the Star Wars universe. Known for his "great face" and iconic turns as authoritarian villains in The Blacklist, Preacher, and Alcatraz, Johnny pulls back the curtain on the "panic" and imposter syndrome that still fuel his craft today. We explore how a RADA-trained talent who once packed shelves at Toys "R" Us transitioned from "unconsciously unskilled" to landing direct offers from Jon Favreau and sharing the screen with legends like Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. Whether he's a mysterious warden or finding the vulnerable lost boy inside a master villain, Johnny's story is a raw, hilarious, and inspiring masterclass in resilience and the power of simply keeping the motor going.
These are the unforgettable stories that landed Jonny Coyne right here.

Dan Perrault was sharing a bedroom with four other guys in Los Angeles when he decided to stop waiting for the industry to hand him an invitation — and start writing his own. This week, inspired by the co-creator of American Vandal and Peabody Award winner, we're breaking down why creating your own content is no longer a backup plan — it's THE plan. We talk about what Dan's YouTube-to-Netflix pipeline really teaches us about getting yourself on camera without permission, why original content stops you from projecting what they want and starts showing them exactly who you are, and the one-page challenge that could start opening doors you've been waiting on for years. Stop waiting for the invitation. Write your own.

How do you go from sharing a cramped Los Angeles bedroom with four other guys to landing a full series order from Netflix off a single pitch? In today's episode, we sit down with Dan Perrault, the visionary co-creator of the hit mockumentary American Vandal and the series Players, to explore his incredible journey from producing viral YouTube sketches to becoming a major showrunner and actor. Dan pulls back the curtain on the "streaming gold rush" that launched his career, the high-stakes crunch to flesh out a season-long arc in just two weeks, and his fascinating experiences acting opposite Hollywood icons like Jamie Foxx and Mark Ruffalo. From mastering the technical art of self-taping to why a failed pilot script is actually a powerful tool for growth, Dan offers a candid and inspiring look at how to write your own path in an industry that rarely hands out invitations. Tune in to discover how a DIY spirit and a parody about high school graffiti turned into a global phenomenon.

From the streets of Pittsburgh to the high-stakes stages of Broadway and HBO, join us for an electrifying look into the career of Margot Bingham. Margot shares the raw story of moving to New York City with a 12-month ultimatum from her parents, only to beat the odds by becoming the only person booked from an open call of 5,000 hopefuls for Rent. We'll dive deep into her breakout role as a singer and actor on Boardwalk Empire, her experience working with the legendary Spike Lee on She's Gotta Have It, and her recent work on the upcoming series Watson. Beyond the credits, Margot gets incredibly candid about battling stage fright, navigating the "toxic" side of major talent agencies, and why she views show business as a product-driven industry that requires a "mama bear" spirit to survive.
