About the podcast
The Socially Distant Sports Bar is an award-winning comedy podcast hosted by Elis James, Mike Bubbins and Steff Garrero — and you don’t need to like sport to be completely hooked.
Elis is the king of Welsh podcasting & Mike Bubbins is TV’s Tony Mammoth.
Each week you get two episodes
Part 1 is fast, funny and chaotic — a stream of clips, sporting moments and internet oddities pulled apart with strong opinions and zero expertise.
Part 2 slows things down with a documentary and book recommendation, diving into the stories that make sport so compelling.
“Elis James and Mike Bubbins are unreasonably hilarious.” — The Telegraph
“A haven where they ramble on about classic clips and random recollections.” — The Guardian
Better known as Distant Pod, the show is a multi-award winner, created and produced by ARIA Gold Award winner Steff Garrero

Welcome to the second half of this week's Socially Distant Sports Bar, where Mike Bubbins, Elis James and Steff Garrero turn their attention to the documentary and book of the week.
This time we're travelling back to 1988, when England's future football stars were being moulded at a residential school in Shropshire, before heading across the Atlantic to meet a man who helped create the only perfect season in modern NFL history.
Two very different approaches to sporting excellence. Both involving a considerable amount of shouting, presumably.
Documentary of the WeekElis: 1988 — Life at the FA School of Excellence
Elis has uncovered a wonderful piece of BBC archive footage from 1988, following a group of 14-year-old footballers arriving at the FA's School of Excellence at Lilleshall.
More than 400 promising youngsters are offered trials, but just 16 are selected for two years of intensive football training, schooling and life away from home.
Under the watchful eye of FA Technical Director Dave Sexton, the boys are being prepared for careers in professional football at a time when the modern academy system was still a distant dream.
It's a fascinating glimpse into football development in the late 1980s, complete with the hairstyles, training gear, coaching methods and extraordinary confidence that only British television of that period could capture.

Book of the WeekMike: Head On by Larry Csonka
Mike heads to America with Head On, the autobiography of legendary Miami Dolphins fullback Larry Csonka.
A Hall of Famer, two-time Super Bowl champion and one of the toughest players of his generation, Csonka was at the heart of the Dolphins' extraordinary undefeated 1972 season.
But this is about considerably more than American football.
Csonka recounts his complicated relationship with legendary coach Don Shula, the personalities and excesses of the NFL in the 1970s, and a life away from sport that was frequently every bit as eventful as anything that happened on the field.
It's a story of toughness, ambition, larger-than-life characters and an era when professional athletes appeared to live by an entirely different set of rules.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Head-Memoir-Larry-Csonka/dp/1637743254
Sixteen teenage footballers in Shropshire. One enormous American footballer in Miami. And three middle-aged Welshmen discussing how it all went.

Another week at The Socially Distant Sports Bar, where Mike Bubbins, Elis James and Steff Garrero once again tackle the big sporting issues of the day. Or at least watch some clips and see where the conversation takes them.
This week we're heading across the Atlantic for a bit of ice hockey, digging out some tennis rackets that should probably have stayed in the garage, and bringing together two of football's greats.
Mike takes us to NHL opening night, where the Americans once again demonstrate that nobody does sporting spectacle quite like them.
Steff has found Andy and Jamie Murray attempting to play tennis with some decidedly old-fashioned rackets, proving just how much technology has changed the game — and how difficult it is to look like a world-class tennis player when your equipment belongs in a museum.
And Elis brings us Roy Keane and Zinedine Zidane. Two footballing legends.

Welcome to this week's Socially Distant Sports Bar with Mike Bubbins, Elis James and Steff Garrero.
This week we're taking a trip back to the golden age of television game shows, before heading into the tactical revolution that has changed football from the Champions League to the lowest reaches of the non-league pyramid.
Two very different approaches to sport. One involving meticulous tactical planning. The other involving Jimmy Tarbuck and a set of rules nobody appears to understand.
Documentary of the Week (Sort Of)Steff: Full Swing
In place of the usual documentary, Steff has unearthed an absolute gem from the golden age of British television: Jimmy Tarbuck's Full Swing.
It's a glorious car crash of a golf-based, general knowledge-adjacent game show, featuring celebrity contestants, questionable production decisions and a format whose rules the audience are apparently expected to work out for themselves as the programme unfolds.
If the idea of Jimmy Tarbuck presiding over a golf quiz that appears to have been designed during a particularly long lunch doesn't make you want to watch it immediately, we're not sure this is the podcast for you.

Book of the WeekElis: The Spectre of Pep — How Guardiola Haunts Modern Football by Jon Mackenzie
Elis brings in Jon Mackenzie's fascinating examination of Pep Guardiola's influence on modern football.
From his tactical philosophy and obsession with controlling space to the way teams across Europe's biggest leagues have adopted versions of his approach, the book explores how one manager's ideas have fundamentally changed the way the game is played.
And it's not just the elite. From Manchester City to the lower reaches of non-league football, everybody now seems determined to play out from the back, regardless of whether the centre-half is entirely comfortable with the idea.
Has Guardiola made football better? Or has he simply made everyone believe there's only one correct way to play it?
Plenty for Elis, Mike and Steff to get stuck into.
Jimmy Tarbuck and Pep Guardiola. Two men who have approached the organisation of sport in very different ways.

Another week at The Socially Distant Sports Bar, where Mike Bubbins, Elis James and Steff Garrero once again prove that talking about sport is entirely optional on a sports podcast.
This week, Mike reveals how his habit of leaving his audio recorder running might eventually prove to be his downfall, the boys uncover some deeply unpleasant Roman bathroom techniques that will put you off your dinner, and Mike explains just how far he'd be prepared to go if someone offered him a bit of land.
And it's quite a length.
There's also the small matter of ham radio enthusiasts. Those bloody hams.
Eventually, sport manages to force its way into the conversation.
Mike brings us the extraordinary photographic memory of LA Rams head coach Sean McVay, Steff provides further evidence that Tony Pulis knows absolutely everyone in football, and Elis revisits Tony Sibson's wonderfully honest assessment of his defeat to Marvin Hagler in 1983.

Documentary of the WeekMike: Rory McIlroy — The Masters Wait
Rory McIlroy: The Masters Wait traces McIlroy’s relationship with Augusta National from watching Tiger Woods win there in 1997 to arriving as a 21-year-old capable of winning the tournament himself.
What follows is a story of talent, expectation, heartbreak and missed opportunities as the Masters becomes the one prize McIlroy needs to complete golf’s career Grand Slam.
The documentary explores the mental burden of repeatedly returning to Augusta, the weight of global expectation and the ticking clock as McIlroy arrives for his 17th attempt to win the Green Jacket.

Another week in the life of the world’s most fearless podcasters at The Socially Distant Sports Bar, as Mike Bubbins, Elis James and Steff Garrero once again manage to just brush the shoulder of actual sports chat.
Mike tells the tale of an unexpected night on the town with Chemical Tommy — and the fairly inevitable consequences — while the boys tackle one of the great technological questions of our age:
If AI is so clever, why can’t it make your laptop turn on faster?
Eventually, sport does make an appearance.
In the clips this week, Elis brings us the universally funny sight of a bloke getting kicked in the bollocks, Mike returns — again — to Vince Lombardi for a genuinely inspiring story, and Steff has the sheer, uncomplicated joy of a kid discovering that running very, very fast is brilliant.

Tom Craine is still here
Which is excellent news for us and slightly less good news for anyone hoping this podcast might eventually become a tightly controlled discussion about sport.
This is Part 2 of our guest episode with the comedian, writer and co-host — with Elis James and Chris Scull — of Oh What A Time...
Tom has also launched Last Match Then Bed, a new podcast dedicated to the game responsible for millions of people knowing far too much about obscure Scandinavian footballers: Championship Manager.
Having got ourselves warmed up in Part 1, the conversation continues through football, the 1990s, sporting nostalgia and the moments that seemed completely normal at the time but become increasingly peculiar the further away from them we get.
Including:
Kinkladze v Southampton, 1996

If you haven’t listened to Part 1, start there first. This will make slightly more sense.
And if two parts of Tom Craine still aren’t enough, we kept some of the conversation back for Bonus Club on Apple Podcasts.

We’ve got a guest in The Socially Distant Sports Bar this week as comedian, writer, podcaster and Elis James’ other podcast friend Tom Craine joins Elis, Mike Bubbins and Steff Garrero.
Tom already spends a significant amount of his working life with Elis on the brilliant history podcast Oh What A Time..., alongside Chris Scull. Now he’s launching another podcast based around one of the great threats to productivity, relationships and exam results of the late 1990s: Championship Manager.
Last Match Then Bed sees Tom return to the legendary Championship Manager 97/98 database, attempting to manage his way to glory with the help of a different celebrity assistant manager each week.
So naturally, we get stuck into football, nostalgia and the sporting moments that live permanently in your brain.
Across our chat with Tom:
Kinkladze v Southampton, 1996

Book of the WeekMike: Rugby’s Forgotten Black Leader by Tony Collins
Mike brings in Tony Collins’ fascinating account of Roy Francis, one of the great overlooked figures in British sporting history.
Born in Cardiff and raised in Brynmawr, Francis went on to play rugby league for Wigan in the late 1930s before moving into coaching. At Hull, he became the first Black professional head coach in British sport, pioneering new approaches to coaching and training while confronting the racism of the era.
It’s a remarkable Welsh story, a rugby league story and an important piece of British sporting history that deserves to be far better known.
Two very different coaches. Two very different eras. And plenty for Elis, Mike and Steff to get stuck into.

Incredible scenes at The Socially Distant Sports Bar this week with Mike Bubbins, Elis James and Steff Garrero.
Elis’ talk of his “vivacious vicar” has everyone reaching for the Cambridge Dictionary, Steff self-diagnoses a nasty case of “anti-trapezius syndrome”, and Mike reminisces about the days when he was quite literally a shadow of his former self.
Eventually, some sport forces its way through the door.
We discover that if you want to play American Football, it’s apparently much better to “be a dawg” than a cat. Mike explains exactly how he’d have brought down Jonah Lomu — which will presumably come as a relief to the international rugby players who spent years trying to work that out — and Josh Pugh delivers a magnificent football manager’s team talk featuring the immortal line:
“We were allowed to fire live ammunition at each other.”

Welcome back to this week’s Socially Distant Sports Bar with Elis James, Mike Bubbins and Steff Garrero.
This week, Steff and Elis are attempting to have a perfectly sensible conversation about a sports documentary and a book.
Unfortunately, Mike has decided to spend much of that conversation sending them an increasingly large number of photographs of himself dressed as a cowboy while very clearly not working as a cowboy.
Cowboy at home. Cowboy out and about. Cowboy going about his normal business. Cowboy, potentially, at the Little Tesco.
Between incoming photographs, we do actually manage to discuss some sport.
DocumentaryMike: Untold — The Testimony of Vince Young
The Netflix Untold series turns its attention to former college football superstar and NFL quarterback Vince Young, looking back at his extraordinary rise, the expectations placed upon him and what happened when one of the biggest names in American sport found himself struggling away from the field.

BookSteff: Cyclettes by Tree Abraham
Steff brings in Tree Abraham’s Cyclettes, a beautifully unusual book about a life spent cycling — part memoir, part visual diary and part exploration of the places, people and experiences we encounter when travelling around on two wheels.
Sport, cycling, fame, expectation and a quite unreasonable number of photographs of Mike Bubbins wearing a cowboy hat.
Thanks for listening.

The Rizla StadiumWelcome to this week’s Socially Distant Sports Bar with Elis James, Mike Bubbins and Steff Garrero.
This week Mike reports back from a less-than-luxurious holiday rental in Liverpool, while Steff comes up with a potentially foolproof plan to solve the financial problems in Welsh rugby using nothing more than some enormous halogen lamps and the seemingly limitless supply of Welsh rain.
We’re sure the WRU will be in touch.
There’s also plenty of actual sport. Mike celebrates the great Billy Boston, Steff brings in Jonathan Agnew and Andy Zaltzman, and Elis heads back to 1990 for Wales v England.
As ever, those are merely the starting points.

This week's second helping from the Socially Distant Sports Bar with Mike Bubbins, Elis James and Steff Garrero is another fascinating documentary choice. It's Steff's pick and tells the interesting and sometimes moving story of Bilal Fawaz, current British and Commonwealth Super Welterweight Champion. "Fight For Freedom" documents his inability to fight outide of Britain because he has never been able to hold a passport.
Elis has picked the "Book of the Week" which is another one to add to your collection. It's "Domestique" by Charlie Wegelius. The book explores the life of a "domestique", a rider who sacrifices his own personal glory and ambitions to support the team leader and secure team victories.

We get an update on Mike's new initiative of trying to make friends with everyone he meets, there's hot debate on whether you talk to your builders and sexy professions.
There's some accidental sport as well including the wonderful Laura McAllister talking about how football executives like her should be "custodians of the game" along with Wham! playing football in China.
ENJOY!!

More from Mike Bubbins, Elis James and Steff Garrero on this week's Socially Distant Sports Bar. It's Documentary time and it's Elis' choice this week. From the BBC archive it's an edition of "Man Alive" in 1969 contrasting the lives of two football managers. Bertie Mee of Arsneal and Laurie Brown at Bradford Park Avenue. It also includes former Wales manager Bobby Gould getting a bit upset at a referee.
It's Steff's choice for the "Book of the Week", James Briggs' "From Ibiza To The Norfolk Broads" takes James and his bicycle on a David Bowie-inspired journey around Europe.

This week’s documentary and book both take us into much more personal sporting territory.
Mike brings in a documentary about Howard Winstone, the great Welsh boxer from Merthyr Tydfil who became world featherweight champion and one of the defining figures in Welsh boxing history.
Elis has chosen Without Robbie by Luke James, a deeply personal story about football, family and grief.
As ever, the documentary and book are merely the starting points, as the conversation heads off into sporting memories, families, Wales and whatever else occurs to Mike, Elis and Steff along the way.

This week Mike revisits one of the most famous deliveries in Ashes history, Elis brings us the story of why Bobby and Jack Charlton’s dad missed England’s 1966 World Cup semi-final, and Steff has a clip from a brilliant advert campaign.
Three clips, several sporting eras, family stories, changing attitudes and, inevitably, a fair amount of stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with any of them.
