About the station

Tautoko FM is a Māori radio station from Mangamuka in Northland, New Zealand. As the country’s second iwi station and the first with FM broadcasting in Northland, it launched in 1987 in a small office in Mangamuka Bridge. The founding was born from the desire of local Kuia and Kaumatua to preserve and promote the Māori language after many families had moved to the cities.

The station offers programmes such as Tautoko Music Mix, Mata with Mahinarangi Forbes, Waka Huia with Kyley and Te Reo o Papatuanuku with Wikitoria Makiha. Early in the morning, elders broadcast with Karakia and conversations. Despite a fire in 2011 that destroyed the studio and equipment, operations were resumed. Tautoko FM is known for its role in the development of Māori radio and community-based content.
