About the station

As Tyrol’s first and only free radio station, FREIRAD holds a unique position in the region’s media landscape. This non-commercial broadcaster, based in Innsbruck, does not offer classic editorial formats but instead positions itself as an open platform for civil society. Through FM frequencies of 105.9 MHz in the greater Innsbruck area, 106.2 MHz from Völs to Telfs, and 89.6 MHz between Hall and Schwaz, the radio enables its members and local communities to produce their own broadcasts. The content is characterised by diversity, as evidenced by foreign-language programmes such as Cafecito pa’l Pan or special broadcasts for the Netzpolitischen Abend.

The station sees itself not only as an audio medium but as a place of mediation and participation. Through offered workshops, interested listeners learn the craft of radio in order to bring their own topics and music contributions on air. A particular focus is placed on supporting local artists, who are explicitly encouraged to contribute their material to the music programme. In 2027, FREIRAD will celebrate its 25th anniversary, emphasising with this long track record its stability as a forum for diversity of opinion and expression in the Tyrol region.
