Radio Essentials

Radio Essentials from Sheffield sees itself as a local commercial radio station for the South Yorkshire region. The programme is available via DAB+ and currently covers the areas of Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster, with an expansion to Barnsley planned. Musically, the station relies on a mix of current hits and popular classics, placing particular emphasis on the region’s musical history. As a result, tracks by artists such as Arctic Monkeys, Def Leppard, The Human League or Heaven 17, who have contributed significantly to Sheffield’s fame in the music world, feature regularly in the rotation.

In addition to music, daily news, traffic information and event notices relevant to listeners in South Yorkshire are a fixed part of the offering. The team also produces the Reyt Good Sheffield Podcast, an on-demand offering with a local focus. Presenters include Mark Ervine, who hosts Saturday Breakfast, as well as Daryl Denham, Gary King and Rob Charles, who complement the schedule with special shows such as Totally 80’s or formats for rarely played tracks. The station, based on Parkway Avenue, sees itself as part of a growing digital media platform.
