Frequently asked questions

What exactly is the first national multiplex?

A "multiplex" (mux for short) is a digital data package. Instead of blocking a separate frequency for each radio programme as with FM, the Bundesmux transmits several programmes bundled over a single frequency (channel 5C). The transmitter network is operated by the infrastructure provider Media Broadcast.

What about reception and network expansion?

The first national multiplex has by far the best digital network coverage in Germany.
• Coverage: The network has around 190 transmitter sites, which ensures almost nationwide reception for nearly the entire population inside buildings as well as on motorways.
• Expansion: Even after more than a decade, Media Broadcast continues to make selective improvements to the network in order to close remaining reception gaps (e.g. in rural regions).
