About the station

Radio FIP: The relaxed sonic journey through France’s musical worlds. As a unique gem of Radio France, FIP has been captivating audiences since 1971 with its eclectic music mix, sensual announcements, and ad-free programming – a contrast to hectic chart stations.

Station History

Radio FIP launched on 5 January 1971 at 5 p.m. as France Inter Paris (FIP) on medium wave 585 kHz (514 m) in Paris. Initiated by Roland Dhordain and producers Jean Garretto and Pierre Codou from France Inter, it targeted commuters: relaxing music with traffic and cultural news, interrupted by the humorous announcements of the legendary “Fipettes”. From 1972 it expanded regionally (e.g. Bordeaux, Lyon), and from 1975 as part of Radio France with FM and stereo.

In the 1980s under François Jouffa, the concept was established: eclectic music without abrupt changes, jazz programming, and emergency programming for Radio France. In 1999, Plan Bleu reduced frequencies in favour of France Bleu and Le Mouv’, and in 2000 several local stations closed despite protests. Since 2006 it has grown again with new FM transmitters, and in 2016 web radios were added. In 2020, local studios in Bordeaux, Nantes and Strasbourg ended; since then, a uniform Paris-based programme. Ruddy Aboab has been director since 2022.

Programming Concept

FIP lives on an unchanged concept: near-continuous music (jazz, pop, chanson, world, classical, electro), smoothly mixed without advertising or jingles. Eight programme makers plan daily double-hour slots eclectically – no artist is repeated on the same day. Announcements (7 a.m.–10 p.m.) by female voices (“présentatrices”) are short, poetic, and music-related; overnight they are automated. Hourly information at 50 minutes past the hour (until 2020).

From 7 p.m., presented content: Jazz à FIP (since 1982, now 7–8 p.m.). Themed evenings, live broadcasts, web radios such as FIP Rock, Jazz, Groove, and Monde expand the offering. FIP serves as a “musical safety net” in the event of breakdowns or strikes at other Radio France stations.

Weekly Programmes

The programme is non-stop musical with local announcements and fixed evenings. Typical structure (based on current schedules, 7 a.m.–10 p.m. live, then replay):
